What To Expect From Your First Psychotherapy Appointment

If you're having trouble sleeping, having a hard time with a life transition, or just going through some anxiety, it can be helpful to talk to a therapist. If you've never tried psychotherapy before, you may be unsure of what to expect at your first appointment. Perhaps you're worried that your first appointment will be a barrage of questions about your childhood, or that your therapist will expect you to fill silences. In actuality, most people find psychotherapy to be a relaxing, helpful experience.

When you come in for your first psychotherapy appointment, your therapist will ask you to fill out some forms that will detail your health history. Getting a full picture of the history of your life can help your therapist to better assist you. Your therapist will go over the forms with you, asking you clarifying questions to be sure that they understand where you're coming from. They'll talk with you about the reason you're seeking therapy, and ask you some questions to help them fully grasp why you've decided to take this step. Together, you'll develop a plan of how often it makes sense for you to see your therapist, and you'll begin to move forward with a treatment plan. If you have questions or concerns throughout your appointment, don't hesitate to bring them up to your therapist.

Whether you're struggling with anxiety, having trouble sleeping, or simply have some aspects of your life that you'd like to change, you don't have to try to figure it out alone. Psychotherapy is an effective way to get the help that you need to make positive changes. If it's your first time trying psychotherapy, know that you're taking a huge step toward mental well-being.
